Boys soccer: Hanford tops Walla Walla in shootout

April 15, 2014

Jacob Thiel made a big save and Jacob Bogen, Kelly Smith and Mario Zarate all scored in a shootout, as Hanford topped Walla Walla 1-0 in a Mid-Columbia Conference boys soccer showdown in Richland.

After a scoreless regulation and overtime, Thiel came up big in the shootout.

“He has quite a bit of experience (in shootouts),” Hanford coach Mike Pardini said. “We are fortunate they missed a couple and our goalie was able to make one of the saves.”

Francisco Sanchez and Gerardo Gomez scored for the Blue Devils in the loss.

“Walla Walla is a good side,” Pardini said. “They broke us down quite a few times. Their coach has them really organized. It was definitely an important win for us and a good win for us to get against Walla Walla and at home.”

The victory moves Hanford (10-1, 8-1) into first place alone, half a game ahead of Kennewick, which faces Pasco today.
