Kennewick — There has been an increase in identity thefts reported in Kennewick as people attempt to file their taxes, according to police.
There were four identity thefts were reported on Monday alone, police said. Three of the complaints were from people who discovered someone else had filed using their social security number and claiming fake returns.
Another case involved a woman from Texas who reported that someone in Kennewick was using her stolen identity to make large purchases.
Police are investigating the report from Texas and the Internal Revenue Service is investigating the tax fraud cases.
Police want to warn residents to keep their personal information secure.
Tri-Cities Crime Stoppers will host Identity Theft Awareness Day on Saturday at the Target stores in Kennewick and Richland. People can come and shred documents for free from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Citizens can bring up to two shopping bags or boxes with documents.
