Baseball: Benard, Porcaro lead Hanford to sweep

April 11, 2014

There is no doubt that the Hanford Falcons can hit the ball and manufacture runs.

Led by seniors Isaac Benard and Anthony Porcaro, the Falcons belted out 29 hits in an 11-5 and 11-2 sweep of Southridge in the Mid-Columbia Conference opener for both teams at Southridge High School.

“We were aggressive at the plate and our pitching was good enough,” said Hanford coach Tom DeWitz. “We played well. We are a solid club.”

Benard went 3-for-4 with two doubles and drove in two runs in the opener, then followed with a 3-for-5 performance with two RBIs in the second game. Porcaro was 4-for-4 with two RBIs in the second game.

Hitting was contagious throughout the lineup for the Falcons, and ended with No. 9 hitter Tyler Cowen going 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the nightcap.

“That’s the way it has been,” DeWitz said. “Production up and down the lineup. We get guys on and they run the bases well. We are swinging it.”

After suffering a loss in the opener, the Suns came out in the second game and took a 1-0 lead after the first inning as Jordan Dawson drove in Nate Newbry with a double.

The Falcons soared right back with four runs in the top of the second, highlighted by a two-run single by Cowen.

Hanford would add four more runs in the fourth inning before the Suns were able tack on a run in the bottom of the fourth for an 8-2 ballgame.

Hanford tagged Mathew Oldham for two runs on three hits in top of the fifth to pull away for good.

“They are a good hitting club,” Southridge coach Tim Sanders said of the Falcons. “We didn’t pitch particularly well; we didn’t hit our spots. They had situational hitting and got the job done. The first game was messy, we both kicked it around a bit. In the second, we cleaned it up.”
