The Hanford softball team got off to a solid start in Mid-Columbia Conference play, sweeping aside Southridge 12-2 in five innings and 4-2 in Richland.

Kadi Patterson pitched five solid innings, striking out six in the opener for Hanford, while the offense banged out 13 hits, including three extra base knocks.

“That is a good feeling,” Hanford coach Lesley Guereca said of opening 2-0 in league. “Southridge is a great matchup for us. Usually we are vying for that 2-3 spot, so getting ahead of Southridge early puts us in a good position going into the rest of the season. If we keep doing what we did today, I think we’ll be successful.”

In the second game, Kayla DeLaPaz pitched five solid innings and Catie Bishop threw two shutout innings in relief to nail down the victory.

Southridge’s big bats did damage throughout the game, but Hanford was able to keep hitters off the base paths in front of them to mitigate the damage.

“Southridge has some big kids that can mash the ball,” Guereca said. “We were able to take some hits from their big kids, but keep the others off the bases.”

Vanessa Casterjon was a combined 3-for-5 with a double, two home runs and three RBIs for the Suns, while Sarah Gilliam was 2-for-4 with a double and a home run in the nightcap.

Alane Wilkerson was a combined 3-for-6 with three RBIs to lead the Falcons, while Emma Garcia was 3-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs in the opener.
