Letter: Second Amendment

April 8, 2014

The recent article on gun control would make a reader believe that if firearms were outlawed it would solve the issue of 19,000 suicides. But like many anti-gun articles, the whole story is rarely told. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, there are also more than 18,000 suicides per year by other means such as suffocation, poisoning and other methods. Perhaps we should be banning rope and plastic bags also.

It also seems that the current firearm laws on the books must be doing something right, because according to FBI crime statistics, the homicide rate has dropped 15 percent between 2007 and 2011.

Ever since the killing of children at Sandy Hook Elementary, there has been a huge push to disregard our Constitution and Second Amendment rights to "save the children." Yet our society seems to be at ease with women having more than a million abortions each year.

Most anti-gun groups quote Harvard University studies. It appears the Harvard scholars have the keen ability to either leave out certain statistics or twist and turn others to nearly always come up with an anti-gun stance as compared to other sources.
