Letter: Legal marijuana -- Not here, not ever

April 5, 2014

Recently, two counties in Western Washington (Pierce and King) were able to pass a statewide initiative to legalize marijuana.

Eastern Washington in general, and specifically Prosser and Benton County, voted a clear majority against the measure.

Subsequently, the Washington attorney general ruled that individual counties and municipalities can choose to not authorize permits to dope dealers wishing to establish retails stores within their jurisdictions.

It must also be noted that once the county or city issues permits to the dope dealers and the dealers make investments, there will be no turning back.

It is imperative that citizens, churches, community organizations, police departments, school boards, etc., make it clear to the Benton County commissioners and the Prosser City Council that people have voted on this issue and expect their vote to be respected.

Our county and city should send a clear and unambiguous message to all dope dealers: not here, not now, not ever!
