Letter: Whitman women excel

April 5, 2014

Congratulations to the Whitman women's basketball team for its outstanding performance in the NCAA Division III Championship Game! Because of the excellent coverage in the Herald, we traveled to my wife's alma mater in Walla Walla to watch the satellite broadcast of the game from Stevens Point, Wis.

Ironically, it was the unbeaten Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham Devils vs. the Whitman Missionaries. There was an overflow crowd to watch the game on campus, so attendees were moved to a large auditorium.

The "Whitties" were ahead at halftime, and represented themselves well. Imagine the fans waking up Sunday morning to find a brief summary of the game stuck on Page D6, with Heather Johns name changed to Johnson with a careless typo. Please -- this was an extraordinary effort by a winning team (31-2 season!). Just because they lost to a very streetwise group from New Jersey should not abruptly toss out the achievement of one of our best teams from the Northwest. We champion the underdog in sports from the Northwest, from the Seahawks to the Missionaries. Celebrate by excellent reporting -- win or lose. Congratulations, Whitman! You are No. 1 to us!
