Food for Thought: Cooking classes offered in Richland starting April 10

If you're looking for new recipes or want to polish your culinary techniques, sign up for the cooking classes at Castle Event Catering in Richland.

Chef Andy and Kathy Craig, the owners, are offering the classes in their newly remodeled facility, Anthology Event Venue, at 706 Williams Blvd., Richland.

Sushi is on the menu for April 10, tapas and wine for April 24 and barbecue sauces June 7. Space is limited to 20 students.

April classes begin at 5:30 p.m., and the barbecue sauce class is at 10 a.m. Cost is $75 per person, per class and includes a meal.

"These will be engaging, interactive classes with about 20 minutes of instruction and the rest of the time hands-on creating," Kathy Craig said. "Our plan is to send our students home comfortable enough to raid the pantry and recreate the recipes they learned."

-- Preservation training

If you enjoy working with people and have an aptitude for food preservation, consider becoming a volunteer with Washington State University Cooperative Extension.

Training for master food preservers starts April 15 and runs for 12 weeks. Classes meet from 9:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Kennewick Extension office, 5600-E W. Canal Drive. Each class covers an aspect of food preservation.

There is a $50 fee to cover the cost of training materials. In return for the training, master food preservers are asked to spend 50 hours throughout the course of the season -- June through October -- to help spread the word on safe food preservation practices.

Some of the ways they do this are through demonstrations, staffing a booth at farmers markets and taking phone calls. They also test pressure canner gauges during the summer and fall.

-- Brews and Brushes

Sip some excellent brews as you paint a watercolor masterpiece at a Brews and Brushes event April 7 at Ice Harbor at the Marina, 350 Clover Island Dr., Kennewick.

Artist Chris Blevins will lead the class, which begins at 6 p.m. Cost is $45 and includes the first beverage and art supplies.
