A 2011 Hanford High School graduate will receive a national scholarship of up to $7,500 per year.

Sydney Bader, a junior at the University of Oklahoma, was one of 283 students across the country and three at OU to be named a U.S. Goldwater Scholar, according to a news release.

The award, given out by the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program, goes to students pursuing careers in math, engineering or the natural sciences and seen as having great potential.

Bader is majoring in biochemistry at OU. She began her research career at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory while a senior at Hanford High. She plans to pursue a doctorate in virology and structural biology and work in disease prevention after finishing her undergraduate education.
