Two Mattawa residents were killed Wednesday night in a crash at the intersection of highways 24 and 240 west of Richland near the Yakima Barricade entrance to Hanford.

Lizania Nieves-Davila, 30, and Claudio Nieves, 32, were declared dead at the scene, a Washington State Patrol release said. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Nieves-Davila was driving eastbound on Highway 24 at about 8:35 p.m. in a Ford Focus with Nieves as a passenger.

After reaching the intersection, she entered it but her car stopped and became disabled. The Ford was then struck in the intersection by a semi-truck and trailer driven by Anatoliy Shabak, 25, of Kennewick.

Shabak was not injured in the crash, though his vehicle was towed from the scene.
