Pasco School District, Yakima Valley schools honored

The Pasco School District and two Yakima Valley schools will receive awards honoring their commitment to music education.

The awards come from the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation, a release said. Pasco was one of three Washington school districts listed as the Best Communities for Music Education. Zillah and Sunnyside high schools were given the Support Music Merit Award.

Foundation officials said they were impressed by Pasco's effort to increase music education availability for students, free instruction to low-income students at Sunnyside and a performing arts center in Zillah paid for by a bond.

"These schools and districts make a strong commitment to music education in the core curriculum supporting its essential value to a well-rounded education for every child," said Mary Luehrsen, the foundation's executive director.
