Man's body found on Umatilla River shore

Tri-City HeraldMarch 26, 2014

— The body of a 60-year-old man was found along the shore of the Umatilla River Tuesday afternoon, though authorities have not determined a cause of death.

William George Powney of Hermiston was found near the Highway 730 bridge, said a release from the Umatilla County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's deputies as well as officers from the Umatilla Police Department and Oregon State Patrol searched the shoreline before pulling Powney from the river.

There were no signs of foul play or marks on Powney's body. The Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office could conduct an autopsy as early as today.

"We have to find what the cause of death is before we know what we have here," said Umatilla County Sheriff Terry Rowan in the release.
