A Paterson man has been charged with first-degree manslaughter after he rear-ended a car on a Hermiston highway last week, killing a 7-year-old girl and critically injuring her mother in Hermiston.

Jesus Moras Nava, 29, also is charged in Umatilla County Circuit Court with assault, hit-and-run and driving under the influence.

Oregon State Police said he ran from the scene after hitting the Kia Soul on Highway 395 at 8:20 p.m.

The Kia, driven by Leslie Roquez, 29, of Irrigon, was stopped in the left lane at an intersection near Punkin Center Road when the Jeep Grand Cherokee crashed into it, state patrol said.

Roquez was injured and her daughter, Teleeya, who was strapped in a booster seat in the middle of the backseat, died at the scene, said Oregon State Police.

Nava remains in jail on $3 million bail.
