Letter: Arlene's Flowers

March 23, 2014

In response to the March 7 letter by Kathy Simpson. She chooses to place faith-based businesses outside the Constitution of the state of Washington, which clearly states no law shall be formed that denies the religious freedom to any resident.

It seems to be her contention that we as Christians wait for a specific opportunity to discriminate against those outside of faith. Nothing could be further from the truth. If you remember, the owner of Arlene's Flowers served one of the partners with flowers for more than a year, but found that participating in the wedding ceremony of a same-sex couple violated her religious beliefs.

This is not an effort to discriminate but an effort to uphold her religious beliefs to which the state Constitution affords her that right.

One thing Simpson does not understand is that we as Christians do not have the right to condemn, judge or hate another human being. Our only mandate is to love God and to love our neighbors. We may not appreciate what a person does but that is irrelevant because we must love them regardless of the consequences to us.
