SOFTBALL: Chiawana sweeps Gonzaga Prep in twinbill

By the Tri-City HeraldMarch 20, 2014

Chiawana pitchers Carlee Gerds and Jackie Martin are getting equal time in the circle early in the season so they can be ready to fly solo when they need to later in the season.

The duo was hard to beat during a nonleague softball doubleheader Thursday in Pasco, allowing just four runs on 14 hits in a 3-2, 12-2 sweep of Gonzaga Prep.

“Jackie is a junior, and Carlee is a freshman who doesn’t have a lot of experience at the varsity level,” Riverhawks coach Paul Antonovich said. “Right now, we’re just trying to get them into shape and ease them in.”

At the plate, Monique Maldonado homered to break a 2-2 tie in Game 1, curling the ball just inside the left-field foul pole to put Chiawana ahead. She also drove in two more runs in Game 2.

Whitney Weber was also impressive in the nightcap, going 3-for-3 with a double, a triple and three RBIs for the Riverhawks, who committed just three errors on the day.

“I was very pleased with our defense. We had very few mistakes,” Antonovich said.
