Letter -- Public safety tax: Yes

March 18, 2014

I applaud Benton County commissioners for placing the public safety sales tax on the Aug. 5 election ballot for voters to decide. I believe the commissioner's comments accurately summarized the importance of public safety to our region.

I have lived in this area 62 years. I have seen this area grow from sleepy little towns to large, vibrant cities. Unfortunately, with that growth comes violence, crime and gangs. I believe we need to send the message to criminals that we will not allow them to victimize us. We need to let our youth know there are alternatives to criminal gangs.

I normally do not favor raising taxes. But this one is different, and support for it is justified. I believe our police chiefs and sheriff when they say they have reached limitations of their available resources, and need our help.

Stand up to criminals. Support our youth. Help our police agencies help us. I will do so by voting for the public safety sales tax. This is one tax that is needed.
