Nathan Streufert, who led Richland High to the second-best record in school history and a berth in the Class 4A state championship game, was named the Class 4A player of the year by the Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association.

The selection was announced Monday.

Streufert averaged more than 19 points, 13 rebounds and four assists per game in leading the Bombers to a 25-1 record (a .962 winning percentage), trailing only the 1978-79 team (26-1, .963) for best winning percentage. Richland also swept the District 5 and District 5/8 regional titles for the second consecutive season.

“Honestly, it surprised me a little. To get recognized by the state as one of the best is a great honor,” Streufert said.

Streufert, a 6-foot-7 senior, will also be the only Mid-Columbia player represented in the WIBCA All-Star game at 6 p.m. Saturday at Eastside Catholic High School. He’ll get a chance to play alongside Tramaine Isabell, who scored 34 points for Garfield in the championship win over Richland, and Bogdan Bliznyak of Todd Beamer High School, who the Bombers beat in the 4A semifinals.

“I think it’s always fun to participate together than play against each other,” said Streufert, the Mid-Columbia Conference player of the year. “It kind of forces us to be friendly, but they’re great competitors.
