Americans lose in shootout in Spokane

March 14, 2014

Parker Bowles gave the Tri-City Amerians life with a tying score in the final 31 seconds Friday night, but the Spokane Chiefs snuffed it out in the shootout for a 4-3 win at the Spokane Arena.

Bowles also converted the opening penalty shot, but the Americans were shut out after that, and Liam Stewart found the net for Spokane in the fourth round.

The two teams will make the trip back to the Tri-Cities to play at Toyota Center at 7:05 p.m. today during the final weekend of the regular season. The Americans (28-32-4-6) host the Seattle Thunderbirds on Sunday.

Jessey Astles scored twice in the first period to get the Ams out to a 2-0 lead. But Spokane countered just 20 seconds after Astles’ second goal, took the lead in the second period on Mitch Holmberg’s power-play goal and seemed headed for a win in regulation before Bowles came through late.

While Tri-City is locked into the eighth spot, Spokane jumped over Everett into a fourth-place tie with Seattle.
