Richland rape suspect's trial date moved to May

A Richland man's trial on allegations he raped and killed his girlfriend's baby has been moved to May 5.

Jose Luis Aguilar, 36, on Wednesday waived his right to a speedy trial, postponing it by five weeks.

Aguilar used to live with his girlfriend and her 9-month-old daughter, Serenity Jade Reedy, in Richland.

Serenity was found dead in her crib the morning of June 7. Her skull was fractured and she had a cut and injuries to her vaginal area, court documents said.

Aguilar left the house sometime overnight and was tracked down in California, where he reportedly was riding a Greyhound bus near the Mexico border, documents said.

He is charged in Benton County Superior Court with second-degree murder and first-degree rape of a child.

The murder charge includes the aggravating circumstances that the baby was too young to defend herself and that the crime had a destructive impact on additional people.
