Rainier Beach boys earn third consecutive Class 3A title

TACOMA — Djuan Piper converted an off-balance jumper from just inside the foul line with 5.1 seconds remaining to lift Rainier Beach over Eastside Catholic 47-45 and earn a third straight Class 3A boys state championship.

Mandrell Worthy was stripped of the ball near midcourt as Eastside Catholic attempted to get a tying shot in the closing seconds.

It’s the eighth title for Rainier Beach and first time a team has won three straight titles in any of the state’s top four classifications.

Shaqquan Aaron scored 16 of his game-high 22 points in the second half to lead Rainier Beach.

Class 2A: David Ungerer scored six of his 20 points in overtime to lead defending champion Pullman to a 64-58 overtime win over Lynden at the Yakima SunDome.

Class 1A: Tournament MVP Brady Widner scored a game-high 21 points to lead Zillah to a 52-46 win over King’s at the Yakima SunDome.

It capped a perfect season for the Leopards, who finished at 27-0. Class 2B: Kalen Dunlap scored 19 points before fouling out and Morton-White Pass held on to beat defending champion St. George’s 54-51 at Spokane Arena.

Class 1B: Jake Straughan scored eight of his game-high 25 points in the closing minutes to carry Colton past Pomeroy 59-46 at Spokane Arena.

Class 4A
: Otiona Gildon scored 10 of Gonzaga Prep’s 11 fourth quarter points as Gonzaga Prep rallied to defeat Mount Rainier 53-51 at the Tacoma Dome.

Gildon led Gonzaga Prep with 18 points and 15 rebounds as they erased a 12-point second-half deficit to claim their first state title.

With Mt. Rainier holding a 26-25 lead, Brittany and Jordan McPhee combined to lead Mount Rainier on a 15-6 run to seize control early in the third quarter. The duo scored all 15 points over the span as Mount Rainier took a 41-29 advantage.

Class 2A: Led by tournament MVP Julie Spencer, W.F. West ran past defending champ Mark Morris 48-37 at the Yakima SunDome.

Class 1A: Tournament MVP Kara Bajema scored 13 points to lead four double-figure scorers as Lynden Christian beat King’s 55-40 at the Yakima SunDome.

Class 2B: Amara Huber scored 17 points and Colfax used a quick start to help topple Toutle Lake 45-38 at Spokane Arena.
