Mabton girls eliminated at 1A tourney

March 7, 2014

The Mabton girls basketball team went 0-2 in its first state appearance since 1986, losing 57-53 to Okanogan in the consolation semifinals after Thursday’s 43-27 quarterfinal loss to Blaine in the 1A state tournament in Yakima.

Mabton built up a 36-25 halftime lead against Okanogan, but 12 fourth-quarter turnovers by the Vikings led to a late collapse as the Bulldogs went on an 18-6 tear over the final 8 minutes.

“The collapse was eight turnovers in a row. My girls wanted the ball in their hands. It was just unfortunate,” Mabton coach Chris McCallum said. “It’s a learning experience for the girls. We started four sophomores, and it was very important for us to make the state tournament this year before going down to Class 2B next year. There was a point of emphasis on doing well this year.”

Solia Zaragoza scored 21 points to lead Mabton on Friday. Desenay Guerrero led the Vikings with 15 against Blaine on Thursday.

Mabton fell to 0-6 all time at the girls state basketball tournament.

“We’re a lot better team than the one that showed up that first night,” McCallum said. “We did do great things. We accomplished more than any other program and had the most wins ever (19) by a Mabton team.

“We’re probably looking at the 2B state title game (in 2015) after this year.”
