DeSales girls stay alive in 2B tourney

March 7, 2014

Teresa Acock scored a game-high 21 points, hitting 9 of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter as the DeSales girls basketball closed out a 57-48 consolation win over Bear Creek in the 2B state tournament at Spokane Arena on Friday.

DeSales will face Morton-White Pass at 8 a.m. today in the 4th-6th place game.

The Irish’s best finish at state was fifth place in 2005.

“We’ve got a chance for the highest finish ever for the program. I really believe the kids are feeling good,” Irish coach Tim Duncan said.

Bear Creek took advantage of a sluggish DeSales defense to take a 13-8 first quarter lead before the Irish woke up and took a 24-23 halftime lead.

An emotional halftime speech from Duncan may have played a part in a more focused second half.

“Our defense in the first half was probably as bad as it has been in five years, and we started slow on offense,” Duncan said. “I had one of my better (halftime speeches) going. I think our kids started playing with a sense of urgency. They realized this is it.”

Ashlyn Lyons chipped in 13 points for DeSales.
