Letter: Signs of the times

March 4, 2014

Shelly Hanson (Letters, Feb. 24) proposes a neutral "faith-based business symbol" to alert the public that "the business owner may decline to perform certain activities based on conscience." She asks if anyone has seen such a symbol in use. Yes. Signs that read "Whites only" and "Coloreds in back." Job opening announcements that said "Protestants only." In Great Britain, "No Irish Need Apply" signs were so common they were abbreviated to "NINA."

The list is long and depressing and includes gender, cultures, religions and ethnicities too numerous to recount. The people who posted those signs were also basing their activities on their consciences and their interpretations of religion, so don't try to tell me this is different. It's not.
