LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Former state Highway Commissioner John Burkhalter has officially entered the race for lieutenant governor in Arkansas.
Burkhalter submitted his official paperwork Thursday in the race for the Democratic nomination to the state's second-highest elected office. He is the only Democrat to file thus far.
U.S. Rep. Tim Griffin and state Reps. Andy Mayberry and Debra Hobbs are seeking the Republican nomination for the post.
The primary election is scheduled for May 20, and the general election is set for November 4.
Secretary of State spokesman Alex Reed said 39 people officially submitted their forms for a public office on Thursday. He said at least 350 people overall have filed their official paperwork since the one-week political filing period began on Monday.
