Letter: Shrill columnist

February 25, 2014

The Tri-City Herald's opinion page has very clearly shifted right since changing its publisher in 2011. Jonah Goldberg and other strongly conservative pundits are frequent contributors. No one, however, has been as outrageously partisan as Jay Ambrose, whose vapid opinion piece appeared Thursday. Ambrose is Rush Limbaugh with a poison pen, a shrill voice whose partisan attacks on everyone from President Obama to the pope are "full of sound and fury signifying nothing."

All are entitled to their own opinion, but not to their own facts. Ambrose, an outspoken critic of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and "environmental alarmists," claims that President Obama is "doing his damnedest to curb an energy boom," and thumbing his nose at oil industry hopes for the XL Pipeline. In fact, oil and gas production has soared under Obama (the U.S. now leads the world), and the president wisely required a full environmental impact statement for the pipeline.

That EIS has been completed. It shows that construction and operation of the Pipeline will release the equivalent of 50,000 automobiles-worth of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. If Ambrose were right about global warming, we'd have nothing to worry about. He isn't, and we do.
