Girls basketball: Sunnyside tops Kamiakin in district title game

Sunnyside 65, Kamiakin 58: Vanessa Alvarez scored 15 points and forced multiple fourth-quarter turnovers as the Grizzlies held off the Braves to win the Class 3A District 5/8 title Saturday.

Both teams advance to the regional playoffs next weekend. Sunnyside will play Auburn Mountainview, while Kamiakin will face University.

Kamiakin led by seven points in the third quarter, but freshman Emilee Maldonado hit one of her three 3-pointers to kickstart Sunnyside’s rally.

In the fourth quarter, Sunnyside played good pressure defense to keep the ball out of the Kamiakin post players’ hands.

Amanda Miller led all scorers with 16 points for the Braves.
