Girls basketball: Kamiakin rallies past UHigh to grab reigonal berth

Kamiakin 52, University 42: After a slow first quarter, the Braves kicked it into high gear and rolled to a regional berth with a win over the Titans in a Class 3A District 5/8 semifinal Friday.

University led 14-4 after the first, but was outscored 48-28 the rest of the way.

“Things looked a little scary,” Kamiakin coach Lane Schumacher said. “We played a little tense and gave them some easy looks. We mellowed out in the second quarter and then the third quarter was when we really exploded.

“That was good, going on the road and getting it done.”

Lindsey Schauble had 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Amanda Miller had 10 points and 12 rebounds as the Kamiakin posts had big nights. Tabitha Wellsandt added 11 points for the Braves.

Sunnyside 84, Shadle Park 73: Jordan Rodriguez scored 21 points to lead five Grizzlies in double figures, as they locked up a regional berth over the visiting Highlanders in a Class 3A District 5/8 semifinal.

Selena Rubalcava added 16 points, Emilee Maldonado had 13, Tiana Perez 12 and Natalia Bazan 10.

Central Valley 62, Walla Walla 52: Madison Hovren poured in 30 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Bears ended the Blue Devils’ season in a Class 4A District 5/8 game in Spokane.

Mikayla Ferenz’s 23 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals led the Blue Devils, while Madi Doepker added 17 points and eight rebounds.

Gonzaga Prep 53, Chiawana 41: The Riverhawks appeared poised to pull of the upset over the Bullpups, trailing by just three after three quarters. But Gonzaga Prep outscored Chiawana 19-10 in the final eight minutes to pull away for the Class 4A District 5/8 title and a berth in the regional playoff.

Delaney Hodgins’ 17 points led Chiawana, while Braydey Hodgins had 12.
