Boys basketball: Richland High clinches regional playoff

February 21, 2014

Nathan Streufert was one assist away from a triple-double, and the Richland boys basketball team rolled past host Ferris 81-64 in the 4A Regional championship Saturday night.

With the victory, the Bombers advance to the state regionals, set for next Friday at a site to be determined — although it likely could be either Chiawana High School or Southridge High.

The Bombers, with a large partisan crowd travelling to Spokane with them, shot 13-for-30 from the 3-point line.

“It was a great team effort in a really hotly-contested playoff game,” said Richland coach Earl Streufert. “Our fans are great. They’ve travelled well all year.”

There were so many fans that the start of the game had to be delayed 15 minutes to accommodate those trying to get into the Ferris gym.

The Richland High band played the national anthem, as the Ferris band was at a competition.

The Saxons jumped on Richland early, leading 13-4 at one point in the first quarter. But the Bombers caught fire and rallied, taking a 20-17 lead after the first period.

“We turned it around at the end of the first quarter, and then we had a great second quarter.” said Streufert. “Steven Beo and Payton Radliff each had two 3’s in the quarter.”

Ferris rallied in the second half, cutting a 17-point Richland lead down to seven before the Bombers put together another explosive run to put the game away.

“We scored nine points in about 45 seconds,” said Streufert.

Nathan Streufert finished with 16 points, 17 rebounds and nine assists for the Bombers, who will play the Big Nine’s No. 2 team, either Moses Lake or Wenatchee, in next week’s regionals.
