Girls basketball: Sunnyside rolls into semifinals

Sunnyside 70, North Central 43: Tiana Perez scored 17 points and Jordan Rodriguez 16 on Tuesday as the Grizzlies moved within one win of the state regionals, ending the Indians’ season in a District 5/8 tournament elimination game.

Sunnyside jumped out to a 33-12 lead at halftime and cruised from there.

Shadle Park 69, Hanford 55: Colette Gall’s stellar career came to an abrupt end, as the Falcons lost to the Highlanders in a District 5/8 elimination game.

Gall had 17 points and 16 rebounds, but the Falcons made just 16-of-53 field goals and struggled defensively against host Shadle Park.

“It is a tough way to end,” Hanford coach Evan Woodward said. “They shot the ball very well, but I don’t think it was our best defensive effort of the season. We fought back, but you dig yourself a big hole, it is tough.”

Sydney Shintaffer added 15 points for Hanford, which lost five out of six to close the season.

University 43, Kennewick 38: Taylor Osmundson scored 14 points as the Lions nearly upset the Greater Spokane League’s No. 1 seed for a second consecutive season, falling just short in a District 5/8 elimination game.

Trailing 22-12 at halftime, Kennewick pulled within 30-26 going into the fourth but couldn’t quite rally. Jayln Brasher-Norwood added 11 for Kennewick, which saw its season come to an end.
