Letter: Star spangled Super Bowl

February 16, 2014

Regarding Jim Wickman's Feb. 6 letter lauding the performance of our national anthem at the Super Bowl. I too was elated to hear Renee Fleming give respect, awe and even honor to our precious anthem. It was inspiring, and yet apprehensive, to wait for the other shoe to fall in fear of how this soloist would torture this grand anthem of ours in her closing. What a soulful and respectful feeling it gave me to hear otherwise!

As a five-year veteran of the U.S. Navy, I have been blessed so many times by standing at full dress in respect for the musician and our glorious flag. All without the foreboding of some ego-inflating closure that respects only the singer.

Please, read the words carefully before you disfigure our anthem.
