Letter: Reverse Citizens United

February 16, 2014

In 2010, with its ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, the Supreme Court ruled that corporations are persons, entitled by the U.S. Constitution to the same rights as people.

WAmend is a coalition of grassroots organizations that believe the Supreme Court was wrong -- that in a democracy, the people rule.

The mission of WAmend, by way of Initiative 1329, is to put our state on record as calling for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution. I- 1329 urges Washington's Congressional delegation to propose an amendment to clarify that constitutional rights, including rights to free speech, apply only to natural persons and not to corporations.

It also authorizes federal and state governments to limit and require disclosure of political contributions and expenditures. The amendment will empower the people to pass laws that will limit money in politics, which has been corrupting our political system.

Move to Amend Tri-Cities is meeting to inform people of I-1329 and to recruit people to gather signatures to get this initiative on the November ballot. Meetings are scheduled 2 p.m. Feb. 16 at the Richland library and 1:30 p.m. March 2 at the Union Street library in Kennewick. For more info go to www.wamend.org.
