Letter: Zoo's actions reprehensible

February 14, 2014

I am dismayed and angered by the behavior of the officials at the Copenhagen Zoo for killing a healthy reticulated 2-year-old giraffe.

The zoo officials determined that the giraffe's genetic make-up was already well represented in the captive giraffe population in Europe. So, they decided to kill the giraffe although there were offers from zoos and private individuals to take or buy this young fellow.

The Copenhagen Zoo folks say that they did this to prevent in-breeding which would foster an unhealthy captive giraffe population. However, the zoo managers knew in advance exactly what this giraffe's genetic make-up would be. It was no surprise to them at all; they planned it.

Then, after the giraffe was born and they reconsidered a lifetime of caregiving for this creature, they decided to do away with it. For these zoo officials to callously take the life of a healthy young giraffe, when other options are available, is reprehensible.
