Safety Not Guaranteed: A guaranteed great movie

Gary Wolcott, atomictown.comFebruary 12, 2014

Valentine's Day is about love and -- while some might disagree it's a love story -- the Battelle Film Club opens its spring series with the clever Safety Not Guaranteed.

Mark Duplass heads an unknown cast as Kenneth, a paranoid inventor who claims he's built a time machine. Kenneth wants someone to test it out with him.

Darius -- played nicely by Aubrey Plaza -- is one of two interns accompanying a reporter to check out Kenneth. Fascinated by Kenneth's sincere belief that he's actually conquered time, she carefully connects with him a personal level at a time.

This movie works on every level, and when it gets to the point where we get to see if Kenneth's time machine is the real deal, you'll love this movie enough to not care whether it works or not.

That's brilliant filmmaking.
