Letter: Value those who support the disabled

February 10, 2014

I appreciate the Tri-City Herald covering the rally in Olympia by supported care workers like myself, who care for more than 4,000 residents in Washington state with developmentally disabilities.

I would like to clarify the headline, which refers to pay cuts to state care service workers. We are not state affiliated. We are a nonprofit agency that works hard to provide for our clients and yet we struggle to provide for our own families.

Our state reimbursement is crucial, as it would reflect the cost of living and provide a modest wage. We are not asking for much, but it is time for us to be recognized and valued. Our job responsibilities range from administering medications to transporting clients, cleaning, cooking, shopping, teaching social skills and more. Our job is not easy, but we love what we do, and we do it to enrich the lives of our clients.
