Wrestling: Pasco High cleans up at sub-regional meet

February 8, 2014

Pasco was a little ticked off at finishing second in the Mid-Columbia Conference standings.

The Bulldogs more than made up for it Saturday at Art Dawald Gym in Richland, earning seven individual championships on the way to the MCC district championship.

“You need individual champions to win a title, but the kids on the backside came through. They worked their butts off. Now we’re going (into regionals) with a great attitude of getting things done,” Pasco coach Jay Covington said. “In wrestling, it’s all about embracing the grind, and we’ve embraced it.”

Bobby Guzman (106 pounds), Patrick Torres (113), Timmy Martinez (126), Luis Velazco (145), Anthony Burrows (160), Gennadiy Kucheryaviy (170) and Roman Cortez (182) all earned district titles for Pasco, which topped Chiawana 317-271 for the team title.

The Riverhawks had four individual champs: Ezra Cazier (120), Blake Bishop (152), Lee McBride (195) and Abzael Loeza (220).

Richland took third with 200 points.
