Suspect leads Sunnyside police on 8-mile chase

February 3, 2014

— Sunnyside police are searching for a man who led them on a car chase Sunday after police contacted him to check on reports of someone spray painting a yellow vehicle black in the Walmart parking lot.

When officers arrived at about 6:30 p.m., they found a man inside a vehicle that smelled of fresh paint who had several cans of spray paint in the passenger seat.

The driver, Michael T. Serna, 45, fled when officers asked him to turn off the engine, according to police. He apparently had multiple warrants out for his arrest.

Police chased Serna for about 8.3 miles, lasting about ten minutes, according to police. The vehicle ran over spikes on Interstate 82 near exit 63, and the vehicle pursuit ended near the intersection of Gap and Luther roads.

Serna then fled on foot, according to police. A K-9 was used, but the dog was unable to locate the suspect.

The Washington State Patrol and Yakima County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the incident.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Serna are asked to contact the Sunnyside Police Department at 509-836-6200.
