Americans beat Red Deer

February 1, 2014

Justin Gutierrez and Beau McCue each scored first-period goals as the Tri-City Americans got off to a hot start and held on for a 4-2 win over the Red Deer Rebels on Saturday.

The win concludes a three-game trip to Alberta, with the Americans (26-22-2-3, 57 points) getting a pair of victories, including Wednesday’s impressive win over Calgary. The Ams are 9-1-0-1 against Eastern Conference teams.

Both teams scored on the power play in the second period, including Mitch Topping getting Tri-City back to a two-goal lead. Red Deer pulled within 3-2 on Connor Bleakley’s rebound 7:26 into the third period.

Brian Williams, who assisted on Gutierrez’s score back in the first, took advantage of an empty net in the final minute for his 33rd goal of the season, tops on the Americans.

Eric Comrie had 27 saves for Tri-City.

The Americans are off until Friday, when the Portland Winterhawks come to town.
