Trios Health hospital in Southridge on budget, schedule

The Kennewick Public Hospital District board was updated about the progress on the new 168,000-square-foot Trios hospital under construction in the Southridge area of Kennewick.

Trios Health's new hospital in the Southridge area of Kennewick remains on budget and on schedule, with the facility expected to open in late spring to early summer, officials said Thursday.

"Where have we gotten to at this point? The table is almost built. Now it's time for us to get the table set so that the real work of this (hospital)" can begin, said Thomas Nielsen of Day CPM Services in Beaverton, Ore., which is providing project management services.

Nielsen gave an update Thursday to the Kennewick Public Hospital District board, which oversees the Trios Health system.

Construction of the new four-level, 168,000-square-foot hospital started in 2012 and should be largely done by early March.

Plenty of tasks still will be left to prepare the facility for the public, including training and employee orientation, officials said.

The hospital will have 74 private patient rooms, including 14 in intensive care, plus another 27 emergency and trauma services rooms, six operating rooms and other features, from a multi-faith chapel to a restaurant and coffee shop.

The hospital's price tag is about $112 million, including construction, some new equipment and other costs. Trios Southridge will be the health system's main hospital, with in-patient services from emergency care to surgery. The Trios hospital in the downtown area is planned to become the Trios Women's and Children's Hospital.

The new hospital, which is near Southridge High School, will have a neighbor at its site.

Trios plans a seven-floor medical office building and ambulatory care center that will connect to the hospital.

Construction on that facility should start soon and take 15 to 18 months, said Chuck Barnes, executive director of support services.

That building is expected to cost about $48 million.

The Wisconsin-based C.D. Smith Construction is building the new facilities and will lease them to the district -- the hospital for about $800,000 a month and the other building for an estimated $333,000 a month. The district has options to buy at points during the 30-year lease terms.

PKA Architects in Portland designed the new hospital, and several local subcontractors are involved in the project. "In a lot of ways ... this is either like a symphony or it's kind of like a dance -- a ballet," Barnes told the board. "It takes a lot of players to put this thing on."
