Umatilla prison inmate found unconscious, dies

— Oregon State Police are investigating the death of a 39-year-old inmate who was found unconscious at a Umatilla prison.

Shane Morris was pronounced dead at a hospital almost an hour after he was found in his cell at the Twin Rivers Correctional Institution, said Sherry Iles, prison spokeswoman.

The cause of death is under investigation. OSP officials typically investigate unexpected deaths at state prisons.

Morris was serving time for sex abuse and sodomy convictions, Iles said. He had been in prison since July of 2005. His earliest release date was in 2019.

The prison is a medium and minimum security facility that houses 1,800 male inmates. It opened in 2000.
