Girls basketball: Defense sparks Kamiakin past Kennewick

Sira Toure, Kamiakin’s spectacular senior guard, got one final chance to make an impression on crosstown rival Kennewick on Tuesday night at Kamiakin.

It was a big one.

Toure finished with a game-high 21 points and five steals, forcing several of Kennewick’s 40 turnovers in Kamiakin’s 74-47 Mid-Columbia Conference victory.

“It was a good all-around game. Everybody got in and contributed,” Braves coach Lane Schumacher said. “I’m happy with the win. Hopefully, we can just keep getting better.”

Kamiakin grabbed the early lead 19-14 in a closely contested first quarter but then outscored Kennewick 20-11 in the second quarter to take a 39-25 halftime advantage.

Schumacher was also pleased with his team’s balanced scoring.

Holly Ellison finished with 12 points and five steals, Tabitha Wellsandt added 10 points and five rebounds, and Amanda Miller chipped in nine points and nine rebounds.

Zoey Garcia led Kennewick with 15 points, and Jalyn Brasher-Norwood added 12 points.

McKenzie Smith had 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Katie Wilhelm had 10 points and Ainhoa Portos had six points and 10 rebounds for River View.

“We knew they were a 3-point shooting team,” River View coach Matt Smith said. “We played pretty good pressure defense. If they did, we made them shoot a little farther out.”
