Captain Jonny Rush's portable fish store parked in Hermiston

HERMISTON -- Captain Jonny Rush's Red Dog Nautical Bus will be parked at El Portal at the corner of Highland and Highway 395 in Hermiston until Feb. 1, maybe Feb. 2.

"I like to stay flexible," he said.

He's been traveling the highways of Washington and Oregon in his fish store on wheels for nearly 20 years, selling frozen halibut, sea bass and ling cod.

He lives in the Kelso/Longview area of Washington and buys the fish portions -- not fillets -- directly from the producers. It's 100 percent organic, with no MSG, phosphates or other chemical preservatives added, he said. The portions are individually packaged and frozen at the factory.

Captain Jonny sells the fish for $8 a pound. Buy a 10 pound box, and he'll throw in an extra five pounds for free. Show him proof you're on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and Captain Jonny will give you a free pound of fish.

"And they don't have to make a purchase," he said.

His mobile fish store is open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
