Powerful pain killer detected in Walla Walla street drugs

Tri-City HeraldJanuary 27, 2014

— A powerful pain killer linked to numerous deaths across the country has been detected in street drugs being sold in Walla Walla.

Police say the drug Fentanyl may be responsible for several recent overdoses around Walla Walla. The painkiller is 100 times more potent than morphine.

Investigators are waiting on toxicology reports to determine if Fentanyl caused the overdoses.

Street drugs taken during investigations in Walla Walla have tested positive for the painkiller, said Tim Bennett, Walla Walla police spokesman.

Fentanyl overdoses recently killed 17 people around Pittsburg, UT, Bennett said. The drug has also been linked to other deaths this month around the country.

Users can easily overdose on the drug by thinking it is heroin and injecting it into their body.
