Mid-Columbia poetry contest winners will face off during a Poetry Out Loud competition next month.

Winners from the following local high schools will be featured at the contest: Delta (Tri-Cities), DeSales (Walla Walla), Kamiakin (Kennewick), Kiona-Benton City, River View (Finley), Kennewick and Walla Walla.

The free event is from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 5 in the Richland Public Library.

The top contestant of the regional competition will advance to the Washington finals in March to compete for a $200 cash prize and an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., for the national finals.

The competition is part of a national program that encourages high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance and competition.

Poetry Out Loud is presented in partnership with ArtsWA, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation.
