Letter: Support school levies

January 23, 2014

I live in Kennewick but build homes throughout the Tri-Cities, and having good school districts is important to the customers I work with. School levy renewals will be on the ballot for many school districts in the Mid-Columbia, and I urge you to support them wherever you live and regardless of whether you have kids in school or not.

Levies support learning and supplement state funds to give our kids the best education, which will support our community for generations to come. There has been a lot of press about the Richland School District's removal of the concrete letters, and I completely disagree with their decision and subsequent actions. Not only was it done without public input, but it was at an exorbitant cost for the task.

However, using those actions as an excuse to vote against the levy in Richland is an example of a punishment that doesn't fit the crime -- or even the perpetrators. Voting against the levy would only punish our students, who would suffer from bigger class sizes, cuts to athletics and extracurricular activities and much more. Expressing your disagreement is fine, but don't take it out on the students who need our support the most.
