Crews repair Interstate 82 bridge

Tri-City HeraldJanuary 23, 2014

The eastbound right lane of the Interstate 82 bridge over the Columbia River near Umatilla is scheduled to be closed until at least Friday morning Jan. 24.

Washington State Department of Transportation crews noticed a hole near the shoulder of the bridge during a routine inspection, transportation department spokeswoman Summer Derrey said. They will have to go under the bridge to place plywood and then pour concrete on top.

“They have to approach it from above and below,” she said.

The repairs are costing between $10,000 and $15,000, Derrey said.

The bridge was scheduled to be repaired in the next couple years, but the discovery pushed the work up, she said.

The narrowing of traffic to a single lane isn’t expected to cause major delays, Derrey said.
