Pasco offering info sessions on schools levy

Tri-City HeraldJanuary 22, 2014

— Pasco school officials will have informational sessions on the district’s renewal maintenance and operations levy tonight and Thursday night.

The meetings will be at the district’s administration building at 1215 W. Lewis St. and begin at 6 p.m. each night, a release said. There will be a 20-minute presentation by district officials with time for people attending to ask questions.

The Maintenance and operations, or M & O, levy will go before voters for the Feb. 11 election and ballots should be arriving in mailboxes.

M & O levies are used by most Washington school districts to cover the gap between district needs and state dollars. They pay for teachers, art programs, athletics, maintenance and other programs.

The levy would collect $21.7 million in 2015 and $22.2 million in 2016 if approved by voters. That’s a combined total of about $3.5 million more than the district’s current levy.

The estimated tax rate both year would be $4.51 per $1,000 in assessed property value. That’s $450 per year for a house assessed at $100,000.
