Othello's Ruiz named outstanding wrestler at Westberg Invite

Othello’s Bubba Ruiz was named the Ray Westberg Invitational outstanding wrestler of the meet for 152 pounds to 285, and Sunnyside’s Jesse Barajas was named it for 106 to 145, as both won titles.

Ruiz pinned Southridge’s Mario Prado in the title match at 285, while Barajas beat Othello’s Alec Lauriano at 120 by a 10-0 score.

Sunnyside’s Jacob Mendoza (106), Homer Romero (113) and Daniel Avalos (182) also won titles to help the Grizzlies take home the team trophy.

Othello’s Manny Martines (132) and Southridge’s Marcus Surita (220) also won individual titles.

Clearwater Classic: Anchored by first-place finishes by Timmy Martinez and Jake Covington, Pasco finished fourth at the Clearwater Classic behind team champion and host Lewiston.

Martinez won the 126-pound class, and Covington earned the 138-pound title, while Jacob Romero (112) and Bobby Guzman (106) both earned runner-up finishes.

“We’re still growing. We’re a young team with a lot of heart, fight and grit,” Bulldogs coach Jay Covington said.
