The principal of Mark Twain Elementary School in Pasco was named Principal of the Year for the Lake Wallula region by two state principal organizations.

Valerie Aragon will now be a candidate for a National Distinguished Principal Award later this year, a release said. The regional award is sponsored by the Association of Washington School Principals and Elementary School Principals of Washington.

Aragon, who started as a special education teacher in the district in 1996, has been Twain's principal for three years.

She was previously a principal at Whittier Elementary School and Stevens Middle School. She's also been a teacher trainer.
