Car crashes on Highway 240 after striking mattress, box spring

Tri-City HeraldJanuary 12, 2014

A Kennewick man was injured Sunday after the car he was riding in was struck by a mattress and box spring that came loose from a truck.

Rahma A. Hussein, 22, was in the passenger seat of a Toyota Prius driven by Bernardo Jay-Castillo, 43, of Walla Walla, said a release from the Washington State Police.

The two men were eastbound on the highway and near the intersection with Columbia Park Trail around 1:45 p.m. when the mattress and box spring flew out of the bed of the Toyota pickup ahead of them driven by Carol L. Lowry, 62, of Kennewick.

After striking the mattress and box spring, Jay-Castillo lost control of the Prius, and it crashed into the concrete barrier along the highway.

Hussein was taken to Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland for treatment. Lowry was cited for failure to secure a load.
