Election letter: Pasco schools: Yes

On Feb. 11, Pasco voters will be asked to approve a maintenance and operations levy for the school district. Levy dollars -- and the matching funds received from the state (only if the levy passes) -- comprise about 20 percent of the district's budget. These dollars are needed and necessary.

This is not a new tax. It replaces the levy that is expiring this year. The estimated tax rate is the same, and 59 percent of the levy dollars will support teaching and learning, which also includes art, music, drama, counselors, nurses, assistant principals and dropout prevention programs.

A third of the levy dollars will fund maintenance and operations, including custodial support, security, utilities, insurance, student transportation and more portables (because our schools are still bursting at the seams!)

And 8 percent of the levy dollars will fund extracurricular activities, including student clubs and athletics.

The levy is a significant portion of the district's funding, and I would like to encourage you to vote yes!
